Champions Awarded at 50th Anniversary Celebrations of a Fieldays® Favourite
Engines roared, and mud flew as the 50th Fieldays® Tractor Pull Competition, in association with PTS Logistics concluded, drawing crowds of spectators across the four days of Fieldays.
Contestants put their machines to the test in challenging conditions, competing in various categories determined by tractor and load weight, age and modifications.
In the Weight Transfer class, where the aim is to drive the tractor down the middle of the track as weight is gradually added to the tractor-mounted sledge, the winner that came out on top was contractor Trent Hickford.
Thomas Fare took out the Weigh-Adjusted competition, where two tractors are in the outside lanes of the track racing side by side with a concrete block behind each of them.
The overall winner of the Modified tractors went to Wally Sinton, and the Pre-85 Class winner was Andrew Reymer.
The Brent Garrett Sportsmanship Award went to Rowland Ambler and the First Time Entrant Award went to Fergus Goodwin.
Goodwin shared, "I have been volunteering for Tractor Pull for over 10 years, and it's the first time I have entered. Peer pressure from mates made me get in the cab."
The wet and muddy track conditions added an extra layer of difficulty to the competition. Organiser Dan Reymer said that this year was one of the wettest years they’ve had for a long time.
"We lowered the kilowatt-per-kilo ratio just to get the tractors through the mud. There was still some seriously good racing out there, and it's as much about the driver's skill as the tractor's performance. The winners can come down to fractions of a second", said Reymer.
For the first time in many years, the competition welcomed a South Island competitor all the way from Gore, along with a group from the Bay of Plenty.
"We had a record number of entries this year—the largest turnout of modified tractors we've seen in a long time," said New Zealand National Fieldays Society’s Venue Operations Manager Marie Rechner, who has helped coordinate the event for the past six years. “Thanks to PTS Transport, we were able to move nine tractors to and from the event, making it possible for more competitors to attend who otherwise might not have been able to transport their machines," said Rechner.
Since its inaugural competition in 1975, the competition has evolved along with the tractors and the technology.
Helping to power this year’s golden anniversary celebrations was new Major Sponsor PTS Logistics, who joined returning Sponsors, Corson Maize and Giltrap AgriZone.
