Landcare Awareness

CRITERIA:
Proudly sponsored by NZ Landcare Trust, the Landcare Awareness category challenges designers to create an art for the body garment made from flora and fauna found within New Zealand. The category has been expanded to include non-native and farmed species, providing designers with the opportunity to explore a greater range of natural materials while also drawing attention to environmental and farm management issues.

Artworks should have a strong background story which supports the design and construction. Concepts may relate to the following example themes:
  • New Zealand is fortunate to have a wealth of unique native flora and fauna but invasive non-native species can pose a serious threat to native biodiversity.
  • Our agricultural landscape contains a variety of introduced plants and animals that co-exist with native species when managed within a suitable farm plan.
MATERIALS:
The Landcare Awareness section offers a range of opportunities for the creative designer. This category is about exciting combinations of natural items, driven by smart concepts. Garments should be made solely from naturally occurring materials from a range of sources.

  • Use naturally occurring materials including – toetoe, fern, seaweed, possum fur, raupo, turkey feathers, horse hair, bark, alpaca fleece, dried flowers, cabbage tree leaves, seed pods, corn husks, exotic tree leaves, duck feathers, rabbit fur, pheasant feathers, sedges, pumice, maize, stone, moss, dried horticultural produce etc. This is not intended to be an exhaustive list; use your imagination and surprise us.
  • Materials to avoid - synthetic or manufactured materials such as plastics, metal, rubber, processed wool, fabrics, wire, processed wood, leather or glass. Do not use weeds (i.e. pampas), noxious or pest plant species to avoid the risk of transporting seeds.
We encourage designers to be as creative as possible but a few practical parameters need to be observed. The final garment must be robust enough to last at least through pre-judging, up to 20 sessions on the catwalk plus additional photographic and promotional work. Synthetic fasteners may be used but they should be hidden from view.

JUDGING:
Judges are looking for innovative, well constructed garments with a strong supporting concept.
Garments should be artistic; therefore, creativity is important in both design and construction. Think art for the body rather than a garment that looks like a traditional garment.

Judges will consider these specific areas:
  • Appropriate use of materials
  • Concept
  • Visual impact, boldness, use of colour
  • Uniqueness of design and originality
  • Art factor
  • Construction - visible fasteners, durability, workmanship, quality
