Ag Art Wear® is a competition and sub-event within New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays. The competition was initiated by former Fieldays General Manager, Barry Quayle. Launched in 1994, Ag Art Wear challenges designers and artists to create a piece of agricultural art for the body. Originally, Ag Art Wear comprised of one category with some garments sponsored by exhibitors at Fieldays. The competition soon grew to two categories, then three, and now it has four exciting and challenging categories.
This important sub-event of Fieldays is a prestigious nationwide competition that showcases garments from designers and offers opportunities for publicity and experience. It also provides a platform for designers to launch their design career and enables up and coming designers to challenge traditional design elements by exposing their creative abilities.
The challenge is for designers to create a “wearable art” garment from materials found on farms, in farming related industries or sourced from the land. By taking these everyday materials and transforming them into unique garments for the runway, there are many challenges for the designers. As a result, the show is a visual spectacle for the audience and media at Fieldays to enjoy.
Concept and competition rights belong to New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays under the registered trademark “Ag Art Wear”; however a deed of license may be obtained by other New Zealand and international agriculture shows who seek to submit competition entries.
The competition is on the list of top attractions at Fieldays and always gains plenty of media coverage. The Ag Art Wear shows attract large audiences each year, with over 4,000 people in attendance to the twice daily shows during Fieldays 2011.
